Beyond the
Basic Formula
While the FERS annuity formula appears simple, optimizing your benefits requires understanding eligibility nuances, timing strategies, and coordination with other federal benefits and outside assets.
Military Service Credit
Buying back military time can add years to your service calculation. We analyze the cost versus lifetime benefit to determine if the 3% deposit makes financial sense for your situation.
Sick Leave Conversion
Unused sick leave converts to additional service credit at retirement. Strategic leave management in your final years can boost your annuity calculation and lifetime benefits.

How to Read This Chart
Find the row matching your full months of credit, then read across to the column for remaining days. The number in the cell is the total sick leave hours needed. For example, to earn 3 months and 10 days of additional service credit, you need 580 hours of unused sick leave.
Why Sick Leave Matters
Under FERS, unused sick leave at retirement is converted to creditable service for annuity computation. This can meaningfully boost your pension. If you have 1,044 hours (6 months) of sick leave, that adds half a year of service to your annuity calculation.
